Katalon Is Deprecating Support for .ZIP-based Repositories

What: Katalon is deprecating its embedded script repository based on uploads of .ZIP files.

Why: Katalon wants to encourage QA teams to adopt industry best practices by using generally available version control systems as script repositories. Katalon has integrations available for a number of the most popular Git-based repositories.

Who is affected: All users that have imported .ZIP-based repositories into Katalon TestOps and Katalon Studio instead of integrating to version control systems.

Katalon, an industry leader in software quality automation, helps QA teams around the world adopt industry best practices for automation and test operations in support of agile and DevOps teams. Today, we are informing our user community of our roadmap to deprecate support for .ZIP-based repositories in both Studio and TestOps.

Distributed version control systems (DVCSs) such as Git are ubiquitous with modern software development. Their use allows for greatly improved controls and visibility into code changes and enhanced reliability in development processes. Industry best practices for automated testing tools have adopted Git-based repositories as the de facto standard for storing as well as enabling collaboration on test automation script authoring and maintenance. Katalon has led the way in helping QA teams adopt these repositories with integrations into numerous Git-based products. With this common practice readily used and available, Katalon is announcing the deprecation of support for its .ZIP-based script repository and focusing on expanding integrations to existing and widely available version control systems such as GitHub, Bitbucket, GitLab, Azure Repos, and AWS CodeCommit.

Katalon began its move toward standardizing version control systems by removing the “Create Script Repository” and “Update Script Repository” options from Studio in the product’s January 2022 release.

TestOps will follow suit starting with its scheduled February release, which will:

  • Deprecate the functions Create Script Repository and Update Existing Script Repository in any projects that have not used them to date
  • Keep these functions in any projects that have been using them

TestOps customers with projects currently using this repository will still be able to use it until September 1, 2022, when all embedded script repository support will be deprecated.

While we understand this change will impact our customers, Katalon is confident the process improvements the version control tools enable will significantly enhance the quality and reliability of test creation and maintenance processes for QA teams.
