Standing with Phu Yen: Katalians deliver hope after devastating floods

In Hoa Thinh Commune, Phu Yen, the floodwaters rose faster than anyone had expected. Homes disappeared overnight. Classrooms were left in ruins. And for many families, survival came at an unbearable cost.

On December 13, Uy Tran, COO, together with several Katalon employees, traveled to Hoa Thinh Commune to deliver both monetary and in-kind donations on behalf of Katalians. The visit marked the closing chapter of the Katalians for Storm Relief Program.

We met with Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Kieu, Vice Principal of Hoa Thinh Elementary School, and Mr. Huynh Quoc Trang, Principal of Nguyen Thi Dinh Secondary School, along with teachers and students from both schools.

Flood damage had destroyed much of the schools’ furniture and equipment, leaving indoor spaces unusable: No desks, no chairs. As a result, the donation ceremony took place in the schoolyard, a quiet but powerful symbol of how deeply the floods had disrupted everyday school life.

Listening to loss and courage

Beyond the distribution of funds, the visit became a moment of listening. Behind the physical damage were deeply personal losses. During the visit, school leaders shared stories of families who lost their homes, and even their lives, while trying to protect loved ones.

                    “The floodwaters rose so fast,” Ms. Kieu shared. “We had no time. That night, I stayed on the rooftop, hearing cries for help all around me, but the current was too strong, and there was nothing I could do.”

“There was a family of four who had to evacuate,” Ms. Kieu shared. “The father carried his wife and two children to safety before passing away due to exhaustion.”

Mr. Trang added, “Everyone lost something - it was only a matter of how much. Many lost everything: their homes, their belongings, even family members. Those who lost the least were the ones who had the least to begin with.”

Resilience in the Face of Destruction

Yet amid the devastation, something else was unmistakable: resilience, optimism, and determination.

Children laughed and played in the schoolyard. Teachers continued holding classes, adapting to what little remained.

Life, though changed, was moving forward.

      Through the Katalians for Storm Relief Program, funds raised by Katalians were directed to support Hoa Thinh Elementary School and Nguyen Thi Dinh Secondary School, helping teachers continue teaching and students return to learning with greater security.
