Guided intentions + Persistent exertion of hard work = Impactful effort
Before diving deep into the equation behind “impactful effort,” it’s important to briefly point out the difference between impactful effort and general effort. General effort does not have to be focused or output-driven, nor does it require measurement or prolonged activity. It can simply be a brief attempt. The equation described in this blog post conveys my perspective and experience on what can truly be achieved with "impactful effort”.
More than ever before, the corporate world now is driven by OKRs (objectives and key results), which is a fancy way of saying had you done what I asked for? Also, outcomes and metrics are metaphors for statistics and numbers. With that being said, I deeply understand the real value of having meaningful and clear expectations (the why/what) which are communicated as OKRs. It’s important to recognize that after something has been done several times, there is present and historical data that can be used as a benchmark or mile marker for potential success or failure.
Guided intentions + Persistent exertion of hard work = Impactful effort
First up, why “guided intentions”? Well, because even the best intentions without guidance can be a waste of time with several intervals of frustration and aggravation along the way! For example, I could have a great intention to build a house and even have all the materials and necessary tools. The only problem is, I’ve never built a house before hence there is a need for “guidance.” In this scenario, there are several ways that guidance could be provided:
Being paired with someone who has built many houses; forming an apprentice-type relationship.
Receiving training on how to build a house in order to learn the craft.
Accessing thorough instruction (e.g., YouTube) on how to build a house using a blueprint.
Any of the above strategies could help to properly guide any well-meaning intentions. Therefore, with proper guidance, greater expectations can be placed on the intentions which in turn make the second half of the equation much more impactful.
Guided intentions + Persistent exertion of hard work = Impactful effort
The second half of the equation, “Persistent exertion of hard work,” is more straightforward but is also the most difficult part to achieve. The difficulty does not emerge from “hard work” itself, but the persistence of it. Sustaining hard work for long periods of time is challenging and can easily make or break the equation of impactful effort. Being unswayed by unexpected circumstances or things that are out of your control is difficult. Lots of effort, persistence, and will are required to maintain engagement. However, it is essential if you want to maximize the output!
Guided intentions + Persistent exertion of hard work = Impactful effort
Early in my career, I learned the power of maximizing the equation of impactful effort. It was the singular most compelling force I could control that regardless of the outcome on the other side of impactful effort I had always grown! It brought about new learnings, new experiences, and positive unintended outcomes while opening various doors of opportunity. It is not a coincidence that people acknowledge, partner with, and reward those they observe exhibiting impactful effort.
As the saying goes, “I can’t control the outcome but I can control my effort,” so why not make it an impactful effort? It’s important to find someone to help guide your intentions or access the proper training to help you level up your understanding. Once you have done that, be prepared to work hard and stay the course. This approach, when implemented properly, is what makes great careers, standout companies, and amazing journeys toward success!
